How To Tuesday: Creating Courses to Brand Yourself
Written on December 22, 2009 by Susan Payton
Prfessor.com gave me a free trial account in exchange for this review. I just thought you should know.
You know I’m big on being an expert in whatever it is you do. In the past, I’ve talked about creating ebooks and other info products. I’ve also talked about going out into your community and teaching courses. Today I want to talk about creating online courses.
The great thing about creating online courses is that you create them once and then sit back and let them make money for you. If you teach a class in person, you can only get paid for that course the one time you teach it. You get paid in proportion to the amount of work you put into it. But with online courses, you create the content and post it, and then people can sign up and take the course any time they want. Your involvement, aside from promoting it, is done.
Enter Prfessor.
I was first introduced to Prfessor’s Instant Academy by a friend. Essentially you can create courses on anything and sell them. I created the Marketing EggSchool, full of ecourses on marketing, SEO and social media, to help provide me with a passive stream of income. I create the course, promote it, and it brings in revenue.
Why You Care
Hopefully me telling you you need to be the expert in your industry is starting to sink in. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seamstress, a welder, a lawyer or a pet sitter, you have great content in your head that others would pay to learn. Pour it out into a course. Here are some course ideas to get your wheels churning:
- What to do with your pet while traveling overseas
- How to incorporate a small business
- Welding 101
- How to start a XX business
- Setting up QuickBooks for a XX business
The possibilities are limitless. And you can charge anywhere from $10 to $1000 a course, depending on how much value you provide.

Prfessor.com is simple to use. You can create your course in the system, and it’s a bit like creating a PowerPoint slide. Add content, photos and videos for each chapter. I like that you can even create an exam for the end of the course! You can get paid through Paypal or some other options, and you can add instructors if you’re not the only one teaching courses on your Prfessor site. You can even designate how much you pay your professors and pay them through your account.
The guys at Prfessor.com really thought of everything when they designed this. You don’t have to go somewhere else to set up the payment system, or design your own website. It’s all built in for $49.97 a month. And that’s a pittance compared to how much you’ll make. I know their updated version is coming out at the end of the year, and I hope to see more cool features for the site.
So if you’re looking for a little extra cash flow coming in, check out Prfessor and get started on your own Instant Academy. Or if you’re interested, take my two courses on using Facebook for business or one of the other internet marketing courses I offer.
