How To Tuesday: Writing a Holiday Post

Written on December 15, 2009 by Susan Payton

Given that we’re in the middle of the winter holidays, I thought I’d help you maximize your good holiday cheer in the form of a blog post. Why bother? Right now people are searching for holiday and Christmas related content. By providing it, you get more traffic to your blog and website. More traffic means more sales…you get the picture.

But Susan, my blog doesn’t have anything to do with Christmas. How can I write a holiday post?

Well, dear reader, I’m going to answer that for you. Sometimes adding Christmas to your industry seems a stretch. Don’t be afraid to stretch; you can find great successes when you take risks. Here are some blog topic ideas for various industries:

  • 10 Personal Tax To-Dos You Need to Take Care of Before Christmas
  • Best Gifts to Buy Your Housesitter/Dog Groomer/Shrink
  • Giving the Gift of Music/Art Lessons/Membership to your Organization
  • What Santa Didn’t Know About His Health
  • Getting Your Sleigh (or Car) Ready for the Holidays

You get the idea. These are just some ideas. But here’s a how-to if you’re still stumped.

1. Search for your industry + “holidays” or “Christmas” on Google and see what comes up. I searched for “Marketing Christmas” and got everything from generic Christmas marketing tips to how to market your Christmas tree business. Perfect!

2. Make a list of topics you don’t see. The search results should give you some ideas, but ultimately you want to provide content that doesn’t already exist.

3. Get creative. If you’re an engineer who blogs, maybe you design a crazy machine that involves dominoes, gears and candy canes for Christmas. Video it and post it as your holiday post. If you’re a chef, make a special recipe for the holidays and take photos.

4. Don’t forget SEO. Make sure you use lots of keywords to get Google juice to your post, like “marketing for Christmas” to ensure people find you when they’re searching for what you have.

5. Post to social media. Use Twitter, Facebook, Kirtsy, Digg, whatever you’re into to share the post with more people.

Now it’s your turn. Tell us what your holiday post will be about. Link to it in the comments so we can read it!
